Central baseball captures slugfest

SCHOLASTIC DIGEST

MARTINSBURG — Hunter Klotz doubled, tripled and finished with six RBIs as the Central baseball team opened the high school season with a 20-10 win over Bedford on Monday.

Central scored 11 runs in the second inning as Parker Greg added two hits and three RBIs to go with two RBIs each from Lleyton Kling and Tyler Helsel for the Scarlet Dragons.

Winning pitcher Jonah Snowberger struck out eight in three-plus innings of work. Bedford got three hits and two RBIs for Bedford.

Bulldogs lose opener

MOUNT UNION — Evan McDonald drove in two runs for Claysburg-Kimmel in the Bulldogs’ 12-2, 5-inning loss at Mount Union in its high school baseball season opener.

Dayvon Wilson had two hits, including a two-run homer, and finished with three RBIs for the Trojans.

Morgan Webb led the Lady Pirates with three hits and two RBIs, Ashley Brubaker had two hits and three RBIs, Elizabeth Frederick delivered two hits and two RBIs, Kaelyn Calderwood drove in two runs, and winning pitcher Madison Mikesic collected three hits.

Mustangs sweep

PORTAGE — Dylan Tubbs won the shot put, discus and javelin to help the Portage boys top Penn Cambria, 92.5-58.5, and Shade, 94-41, in high school track and field action.

Scott Berardinelli won the 100- and 200-meter dashes for the Mustangs.

The Portage girls defeated Penn Cambria, 90-46, and Shade, 102-37. Lauren Shaffer set a new school record in the 1600 run (5:27) and also won the 800. Cami Burkett placed first in the 100 and 200 dashes.

WestPAC honors

The WestPAC All-Conference selections for winter sports were recently made with Portage High School well represented in four different sports.

Making the list for the girls basketball team were Lindsey Sease and Lauren Shaffer, while Kaden Claar and Preston Rainey made the team in boys basketball team. Anthony Coukart made it in wrestling while Abby Thrower was selected for the rifle team.
