Altoona opens with victory

Led by Gracie Weaver, the Altoona Area High School gymnastics team opened the season with a 136.15-120.2 win over Bellefonte at the AAHS Fieldhouse on Wednesday.

Weaver finished first in the vault, bars and floor, was tied for second on the beam and won the all-around with a 35.925. Teammate Hannah Shaffer was second in the all-around after placing second in the vault and beam. Altoona’s Abby Donlan won the beam and was second on the bars.

Carroll rifle team triumphs

EBENSBURG — The Bishop Carroll rifle team won its season opener on Wednesday, defeating Berlin Brothersvalley, 1,225-1,082 in high school action.

Tim Ludwig led the Huskies with a 260 while Nick Smith was second at 251.

Berlin’s top shooter was Dalton Maust at 230.

BERLIN BROTHERSVALLEY (1082): Maust 230, Yeager 219, Gindlesperger 219, Miller 210, Leydig 204.

BISHOP CARROLL (1225): Ludwig 260, Smith 251, Bennett 247, Farabaugh 239, Yahner 228.
