CRANBERRY TOWNSHIP — Philipsburg-Osceola kept its perfect season in tact, knocking off defending PIAA Class 2A champion North Catholic, 25-15, 25-20, 24-26, 25-22, in the PIAA semifinals Tuesday.
The Lady Mounties will play Trinity, a 25-12, 25-13, 25-13 winner over Pine Grove in the other semifinal, in the state championship at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Cumberland Valley High School in Mechanicsburg.
Philipsburg-Osceola started strong, taking a 15-3 lead in the first set, behind the strong play from 6-foot-1-inch freshman Reese Hazelton. The Lady Mounties looked as though they were going to cruise to a 2-0 advantage in the second set, but North Catholic rallied to within two at 17-15 before P-O went on a run and eventually won the set, 25-20, on a kill from Hazelton from the front middle.
Philipsburg-Osceola led the third set 15-13 before allowing four straight points by North Catholic, the final two on kills from Sydnei Jones. The Lady Mounties fought back to tie the set at 19 before eventually taking a 24-23 lead.
However, North Catholic scored the final three points of the set with the final one coming on a Jones’ block of Hazelton.
