Win puts Lady Mounties in state finals

From Mirror reports

CRANBERRY TOWNSHIP — Philipsburg-Osceola kept its perfect season in tact, knocking off defending PIAA Class 2A champion North Catholic, 25-15, 25-20, 24-26, 25-22, in the PIAA semifinals Tuesday.

The Lady Mounties will play Trinity, a 25-12, 25-13, 25-13 winner over Pine Grove in the other semifinal, in the state championship at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Cumberland Valley High School in Mechanicsburg.

Philipsburg-Osceola started strong, taking a 15-3 lead in the first set, behind the strong play from 6-foot-1-inch freshman Reese Hazelton. When Hazelton was forced to move to the back row, North Catholic began to get back into the set but fell too far behind to make it competitive. The Lady Mounties had five aces in the set.

The Lady Mounties looked as though they were going to cruise to a 2-0 advantage in the second set, but North Catholic rallied to within two at 17-15 before P-O went on a run and eventually won the set, 25-20, on a kill from Hazelton from the front middle.

Philipsburg-Osceola led the third set 15-13 before allowing four straight points by North Catholic, the final two on kills from Sydnei Jones. The Lady Mounties fought back to tie the set at 19 before eventually taking a 24-23 lead.

However, North Catholic scored the final three points of the set with the final one coming on a Jones’ block of Hazelton.

North Catholic rode the momentum to take an early advantage in the fourth set before Philipsburg-Osceola caught up and tied the set at 16. The Lady Mounties eventually took a 20-16 lead, which led to a North Catholic timeout. North Catholic closed within 24-22, but the Lady Mounties clinched a spot in the state final on the next point.

Ally Feczko had 20 kills for North Catholic, which finished its season 18-1. Philipsburg-Osceola improved to 20-0.
