P-O girls win volleyball title
Philipsburg-Osceola defeated Bald Eagle Area, 25-23, 25-18, 30-32, 25-16, to win the District 6 Class 2A girls volleyball championship at the Altoona Area High School Fieldhouse Tuesday night.
The Lady Mounties, which got a game-clinching kill from freshman Reese Hazelton in their opening 25-23 victory, defeated the Lady Eagles for the third time this season. When Philipsburg-Osceola topped BEA on Oct. 6, it snapped a Mountain League record 82-game league winning streak by the Lady Eagles.
Philipsburg-Osceola clinched a Mountain League title by sweeping BEA on Oct. 30 before winning Tuesday’s district final in four sets.
The Lady Mounties will travel to District 10 champion Maplewood for a PIAA quarterfinal matchup Saturday at 1 p.m.
In other PIAA Class 2A girls volleyball action, District 9 champion Redbank Valley eliminated District 5 champion Chestnut Ridge, 28-26, 22-25, 25-20, 25-21.
The Lady Lions scored the final three points to win the second set but missed out on a chance to take control in the third set when Redbank Valley finished on an 8-1 run in a 25-20 triumph.
Redbank Valley will travel to WPIAL champion North Catholic on Saturday at noon for a PIAA quarterfinal matchup. The winner of that contest will play the winner of Philipsburg-Osceola and Maplewood in the PIAA Class 2A semifinals on Nov. 17.
KARNS CITY — The Bedford boys soccer team was eliminated in the first round of the PIAA Class 2A playoffs Tuesday night when Karns City got a goal off a rebound from Dakota King with 5:55 to play in a 1-0 loss.
Josh Diehl had a good look for the Bisons earlier in the second half but his shot went off the crossbar.
Karns City will play Deer Lakes on Saturday.
