Bedford captures another title

The first half may have produced no goals for the Bedford girls’ soccer team, but that didn’t last too long into the second half.

Powered by Sydney Taracatac’s tally in the 47th minute, the top-seeded Lady Bisons ran away with a 3-0 shutout over No. 2 Westmont Hilltop in the District 5-6 Class 2A Championship Wednesday night at Mansion Park to capture their fifth straight district crown.

The win was their 11th shutout of the season.

“We all knew they were going to come out hot, but we needed to come out hotter,” Taracatac said. “I saw an opening in the defense when I was dribbling across the 18 and I knew I had to take the shot and it fell in.”

The Lady Bisons (13-0) had a pair of big score opportunities in that opening frame including a Grace Sarver found Juliana Taylor who’s pass to Taracatac was knocked out of bounds by Hilltopper goalkeeper Sabrina Zimmerman who turned away 11 shots.

“We had some chances in the first half, it just seemed like something closed or somebody run the wrong way,” Bedford coach Jeff Thomas said. “We got our passes connected on the second half. It was a tremendous team effort. Defense played tremendous.”

That defense didn’t allow many opportunities to reach netminder Lindsay Mowry as she stopped both scoring chances for a defense that has allowed just two goals all season.

“I don’t think she touched the ball a whole lot tonight, but when she did, she was slowing the game back down,” Thomas said. “She always a leader back there.”

Moving ahead to the second half, 15 minutes after the Taracatac goal, Katelyn Shaffer found the back of the net on an assist from Abby Donaldson to make it 2-0.

That would be followed later on by a marker from Donaldson from Sarver for the game’s final score.

“We needed that first goal,” Thomas said. “If we got it in the first half, we probably would’ve scored some more goals, but it didn’t happen.”

Westmont Hilltop coach Curtis Lichtenfels — whose team finishes with a record of 12-4 — felt that the Lady Bisons’ experience seemed to show during the second half explosion.

“They won the 50-50 balls; they won the balls in the air,” he said. “You can say it’s probably more experience. They’ve been there before; they’ve been to the championship before.

“These girls do not know the word quit. It was a good season for us, a good learning experience.”

The Lady Bisons — who’s pursuit of an undefeated season continues — will now have a break for the next 10 days before opening the PIAA Class 2A state playoffs on Saturday, Nov. 14 against the District 10 champion at a site and time to be determined.
