Central falls short in playoffs

BEDFORD — The No. 1 seeded Bedford Area High School girls soccer team survived a scare in its District 6 Class 2A quarterfinal game with Central Monday night, leaving with a 1-0 victory over the Lady Dragons.

Central (7-7-3) was the No. 8 seed.

Bedford, which went into the match at 10-0, got its lone goal of the game from Grace Sarver off a Katelyn Shaffer assist at the 35:15 mark. It’s all the Lady Bisons needed.

Bedford keeper Lindsay Mowry finished with six saves. Central’s keeper was Katheryn Longenecker.

Bedford will face the winner of tonight’s Forest Hills-Bald Eagle Area game on Thursday in the semifinals. BEA is the No. 4 seed, while Forest Hills is the No. 5 seed.

In other 2A games Monday, Richland beat Somerset, 2-0, while Westmont Hilltop won in a shootout over Huntingdon, 2-1. Richland will now play at Westmont Hilltop in the other semifinal game Thursday.

Altoona girls cruise

McKEESPORT — Six different players scored goals in the Altoona girls’ 7-0 victory over McKeesport.

Morgan Sarver led the unbeaten Lady Lions with two goals and two assists, Lauren Kiser had one goal and two assists, Cassie Kyle had a goal and an assist, and Darrian Berkheimer, Nicole Hawk and Sarah Graham each added goals.

Keepers Julia Lane and Quinn DeAntonio combined for the shutout.

Altoona boys dominate

McKEESPORT — The Altoona boys improved to 9-1 with a 9-0 shutout of McKeesport.

Graham Black assisted on three goals for the Mountain Lions, and Austin Kravetz scored two goals. Eight different Altoona players scored goals.

Keeper Brennen Dugan recorded his seventh shutout of the season.
