Shaffer wins Altoona event

Portage’s Lauren Shaffer and Penns Valley’s Brendan Colwell were the individual winners in the 25th Altoona Mountain Lion Cross Country Invitational on Saturday at Logan Elementary School.

Shaffer won the girls race in 19 minutes, 50.55 seconds to help Portage finish third in the team race behind Penns Valley and Windber. Alex Chobany was eighth for the Lady Mustangs.

The Altoona girls, with Reese Wilber 10th and Mackenzie Kelley 11th, placed fourth.

Colwell set a course race with a 15:54 as Penns Valley edged Altoona and Hollidaysburg for the boys team title.

Placing in the top 10 were Northern Bedford’s Ian Zimmerman (second), Hollidaysburg’s Ben Love (fourth) and Chris Love (fifth), Altoona’s Jack Hatch (seventh) and Tyrone’s Garin Hoy (10th).

CC dominates

CRESSON — Central Cambria dominated Penn Cambria, 15-48, in boys competition and 15-50 in girls action in cross country.

Annaliese Niebauer and Stella Kuntz tied for first in the girls race with times of 20:43, and Toby Cree captured the boys race in 17:04. Tyler Gibson was second in 17:07 and Eli Wendel was just a second behind him in third. Logan Michina finished sixth for Penn Cambria in 17:20.

Heights splits

PATTON — Cambria Heights edged Bishop McCort, 26-29, in boys cross country and lost to the Crushers, 25-30, in girls competition.

Brock Eckenrode won the boys race for the Highlanders in 21:22. Maggie McMullen won the girls race for Heights in 23:13 ahead of her sister Ellie, who was the runner-up in 26:30.

ROARING SPRING — Ella Garner scored the first two goals of the game to give Central a lead, but Tyrone’s Chloe LaRosa responded with two second-half goals to tie the game.

After two scoreless overtime periods, the Lady Dragons and Lady Eagles settled for a 2-2 tie in girls soccer.

Bradon Kensinger added a goal and two assists for the Scarlet Dragons.

Alex Taylor’s hat trick accounted for all the Golden Eagles’ goals.

Haylie Mingle had a team-high eight service points for Central, and Abbie Kitt added eight digs.

SC wins opener

STATE COLLEGE — Gretta Rhodes won in singles action, and the teams of Talia Delerme and Alana Shultz and Regan McKee and Rachel Gallagher won in doubles play, but Hollidaysburg fell to State College, 4-3, in girls tennis.

It was State College’s first tennis compeptition of the season following board approval for its season to begin on Thursday night.
