Lady Lion makes it to championship final

Altoona sophomore Morgan Stevens earned a spot in the District 6 Class 3A singles tennis championships for the second year in a row after winning three matches on Thursday at Mansion Park.

Stevens will meet State College’s Quiana Guo in Saturday’s 10 a.m. District 4-6 final. Stevens was the runner-up last season.

Stevens defeated Hollidaysburg’s Gretta Rhodes in the semifinals, 6-2, 6-1, after beating State College’s Catlelyn Janac, 6-3, 6-2, in the quarterfinals and Mifflin County’s Sydney Kyle, 6-0, 6-1, in the first round.

Rhodes had won in the quarterfinals, 6-1, 6-1, over Central Mountain’s Olivia Anastos.

Guo advanced with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Altoona’s Isabella Frank in the semifinals. Frank made the semis with a 7-6, 6-1 win over Hollidaysburg’s Ella Jodon, who won her first-round match, 6-1, 6-3, over Shikellamy’s Melanie Minnier.

Class 2A starts

Defending champion Alyssa Kush of Westmont Hilltop is the top seed for today’s District 6 Class 2A singles tennis championships at Mansion Park.

Play begin at 9 a.m. and will run through the semifinals.

Central Cambria’s Olivia Ratchford and Corinne Markovich are seeded second and third, respectively, and Bishop Guilfoyle’s Erin Talko is seeded fourth.

Riley wins No. 100

MARTINSBURG — Central coach John Riley won his 100th career match as Central beat Huntingdon, 6-1, on senior day.

Seniors Ellen Kennedy, Miranda Madden and Ariadne Madden were honored and also won singles matches.
