Ridge dominates with six champions

Horton, Dull, Cassidy, Younker, Imler also prevail

JOHNSTOWN — Chestnut Ridge extended its reign of dominance in the District 5 Class 2A wrestling tournament Saturday night in the Richland Area High School gymansium, but first-year head coach Josh Deputy, obviously a perfectionist, still detected room for improvement.

In rolling to its ninth consecutive District 5 team title, Ridge advanced 11 wrestlers, including six as district champions, to next weekend’s Southwest AA Regional Tournament at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, but Deputy said that his team will get back to the drawing board this week in practice.

“Eleven is a great number to be taking to regionals,” said Deputy, who served as an assistant coach under Greg Lazor for the past seven years at Ridge before taking over as head coach this season. “I’m sure that any program would love to have that (many advance). And we had six district champs, so I’m pleased with that.

“It feels great (to win another team title), but we didn’t wrestle our best today,” Deputy added. “Still, the guys who should have made it through, made it through. We’ll get back at it (in practice) on Monday and try to make that trip (to the state tournament) at Hershey.”

Ridge champions included freshman Calan Bollman (106 pounds), junior Kai Burkett (113), senior Nate Holderbaum (120), sophomore Daniel Moore (160), senior Seth Holderbaum (182), and senior Duane Knisely (220).

Burkett and Nate Holderbaum both won their third District 5 titles, while Knisely took his second.

Sophomore Ross Dull (126) and junior Kaleb Miller (132) took second places, and senior Grypton Callihan (145), sophomore Luke Moore (152), and junior Baltzer Bollman (170) earned regional berths by placing third at the district tournament for Ridge, which racked up 219.5 points in breezing to the team title over runners-up Berlin Brothersvalley and Bedford, both of who were tied for a distant second with 136 points.

A total of 26 wrestlers from the Mirror coverage area advanced to the regional. Bedford moved on seven wrestlers, including individual champions Kaden Cassidy, a senior 138-pounder, and junior 195-pounder Ashton Dull. Third-place finishers included senior Mat Emerick (120), juniors Camden Koontz (126). Jacob Dawson (132), and Connor Clarke (160), and sophomore Cooper Lingenfelter (182).

Cassidy won his third district title, including his second in District 5.

Northern Bedford advanced four wrestlers — senior 170-pound champ Colby Imler, and three third-placers — sophomores Reyan Imler (106) and Derek Beach (285), along with senior Ian Sherlock (138).

Tussey Mountain moved on two wrestlers, including 126-pound district champion Hunter Horton, a junior who was named the tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler, and 285-pound sophomore Matt Watkins.

Everett also advanced two wrestlers — senior 132-pound district champion Lane Younker and senior third-placer Logan Propst (220).

Nate Holderbaum won his third district title by overcoming an early 5-0 deficit and posting an 8-5 victory over North Star’s Eli Brougher at 120.

“It’s always tough coming back against a solid kid,” Holderbaum said. “It was a gut check for me. I knew that I had to come back and wrestle my best.”

Burkett (33-4) also became a three-time district champion in much easier fashion, pinning Berlin Brothersvalley’s Hunter Cornell in 65 seconds in the 113-pound title match.

“I wrestled him at the District 5 duals (two weeks ago) and pinned him,” Burkett said. “I was just going out there today with the idea of taking care of the match.”

Knisely (35-3) made it two straight district championships at 220 pounds by pinning Berlin’s Brady Bobourchock in 80 seconds in the title match.

“I wanted to bring my ‘A’ game,” Knisely said. “Our team did well, and it was cool to be a part of it.”

Seth Holderbaum — Nate’s cousin — built a 14-3 lead in the 182-pound title match before pinning Meyersdale’s Jonah Smith at the 39-second mark of the third period.

“I have a tendency to try to go upper body, then I run out of gas,” Holderbaum said. “I tried to stay away from that, and it worked out well.”

Bollman (33-3), racked up six takedowns and a 14-5 major decision over North Star junior Nathan Pelesky in the 106-pound championship match.

“There were some places where I could have executed a little better, but I was really excited about my performance,” Bollman said.

Daniel Moore was solid in an 11-3 major decision over Meyersdale’s Austin Broadwater in the 160-pound title match.

“It was a good tournament, I had two tough matches,” Moore said. “I’m really proud of the win.”

Tussey’s Horton (29-7), a second seed at 126, carted off the OW trophy by hitting a third-period reversal for a 5-4 championship win over Ridge top seed Ross Dull.

“He beat me 12-4 earlier this year, and, especially in an atmosphere like this, it feels good to come back,” Horton said.

Bedford’s Cassidy (28-0) rebounded from an early 4-0 deficit to rack up an 11-4 victory over Berlin’s Tyler Coddington, who was a former state medalist in Montana.

“It wasn’t my best match, but I scored 11 unanswered points, (so) I’ll take it,” Cassidy, a two-time PIAA bronze medalist, said.

Bedford’s Ashton Dull grinded out an 11-8 victory over Meyersdale’s Jake Most in the 182-pound title match, scoring four takedowns in the process.

“I had a tough loss to him in the (Bedford) Thomas (Chevrolet) Tournament (two weeks ago),” Dull said. “I thought I wrestled fairly well tonight. I’m working hard to get better each and every week.”

Northern Bedford’s Imler (26-6) won the 170-pound title with a 4-1 championship decision over Meyersdale’s Drake Gindlesperger.

“I wrestled him before, so I knew what to expect, but credit to him — he’s a good wrestler,” Imler said of Gindlesperger. “It feels really good to get out there and get a win.”

In one of the night’s most exciting finishes, Everett’s Younker (25-6) turned a reversal into a five-point move in the waning seconds for a 5-1 victory over Chestnut Ridge’s Kaleb Miller in the 132-pound title match.

Younker finished the match with a bloody nose, but was feeling no pain after the late comeback.

“I wasn’t planning on that — I just got super lucky,” Younker said. “I just rolled him and got a reversal and back points. I’m ecstatic.”

Meet notes: Tussey Mountain’s Watkins made it to the 285-pound title match but dropped an 11-0 major decision there to Meyersdale standout Jalen Stephens (31-1) … Berlin’s Sal Lascari was named the District 5 high school coach of the year, while Somerset’s Nate Phillips was named the District 5 junior high coach of the year … District 5 Wrestling Hall of Fame inductees honored before the championship finals included four former wrestlers from the Mirror coverage area — Bedford’s Joel Easter and Gary Diehl, Everett’s Jeff Foor, and Tussey Mountain’s Shawn Husick.
