PSU Altoona athletes receive AMCC honors
Penn State Altoona freshman Grace Dangelo was chosen as the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference’s Women’s Swimmer of the Week.
The award marks the conference-leading fifth time this season that Dangelo has been selected the AMCC’s women’s top swimmer.
The freshman had another standout performance for the Penn State Altoona women’s swimming team during a home meet against Penn State Behrend, notching three individual first-place finishes — including setting one new team record — and assisting on a relay first place.
Dangelo won the 50 freestyle with a time of 25.98, and she took first in the 200 breaststroke by clocking in at 2:34.73. In the 400 IM, Dangelo, from State College, set a new women’s swimming team record by posting a time of 4:43.67 to place first.
The freshman also helped her team win the 200 freestyle relay, combining with her teammates for a time of 1:49.84 to take first.
Dangelo’s recognition is the seventh time this season that a Penn State Altoona women’s swimmer has taken home the AMCC’s weekly awards.
In other news, women’s basketball junior guard/forward Alexis Cannistraci was named the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Player of the Week for her efforts.
Cannistraci averaged a double-double last week to power the Lady Lions to a pair of AMCC wins.
In a 62-58 win over Pitt-Greensburg, Cannistraci totaled 13 points, 10 rebounds, three blocks, two steals, and two assists.
In an 87-49 victory over Alfred State College, she grabbed a career-high 18 rebounds while scoring 15 points, recording four steals, blocking three shots, and dishing out two assists.
On the week, Cannistraci averaged 14.0 points per game, 14.0 rebounds per game, 3.0 blocks per game, 3.0 steals per game, and 2.0 assists per game.
The junior from Tyrone currently ranks among the AMCC’s top players in several different statistical categories, including being second in the conference in points per game (17.7), steals per game (2.9), and blocks per game (1.7), as well as fifth in rebounds per game (9.6).
This is Cannistraci’s second AMCC Player of the Week award this season.
