Princeton rolls to easy win over PSU women

PRINCETON, N.J. — The Penn State women’s basketball team fell victim to a strong Princeton team as the one-loss Tigers handed the Lady Lions a 72-55 defeat Saturday afternoon at Jadwin Gymnasium.

Senior Siyeh Frazier and freshman Makenna Marisa scored 12 points apiece to lead the Lady Lions, while freshman Shay Hagans finished with a career-best nine points. The Princeton duo of Bella Alarie and Carlie Littlefield combined for 48 of the Tigers’ 72 points.

Princeton scored the first basket of the game, but Penn State rattled off the next eight points thanks to buckets from four different Lady Lions as PSU grabbed an early 8-2 lead less than three minutes in. Turnovers plagued Penn State for the rest of the quarter, however, as eight PSU miscues turned into 11 Princeton points and the Tigers closed the term on a 13-5 run to take a 15-13 lead through one.

The Tigers carried their momentum into the second quarter as three Alarie three-pointers and five points from Littlefield helped Princeton open the term on a 14-0 run to take a 29-13 lead.

Five points from Frazier snapped the streak with under five minutes to play in the first half. A Hagans three-pointer and seven points from Marisa then followed to close the second quarter and help PSU pull within 40-28 at the break.

Princeton shot 57.1 percent (8-for-14) from the field in the third quarter to grow its lead to 61-40 through three terms.

Penn State spent the final six minutes of the game on a 12-3 run but it was too little, too late as the Tigers earned the 72-55 win.

Hagans nine points bested her previous collegiate best of eight points that was set on Nov. 30 vs. N.C. Central.

Frazier scored in double figures for the sixth time this season.
