BOZEMAN, Mont. — Tucker Rovig passed for 279 yards and three touchdowns in leading Montana State to a second-round FCS playoff victory over Albany 47-21.
Rovig finished 24 for 30 with no interceptions. Montana State’s other quarterback Travis Jonsen ran for 85 yards on six carries, including a 47-yard touchdown run. The 47 points is the most the Bobcats (10-3) have scored in their playoff history.
“I have to take off my hat to them and their fans, they really brought the energy,” Albany coach Greg Gattuso said. “From our end, I think the kicking game got us into a bit of trouble. We had a blocked punt which resulted in a safety for them and that began to swing the momentum. Defensively, we battled the entire game. Our guys gave us a shot to close the gap before halftime but in the end, we just couldn’t push through. At the end of the day, I just love this football team. I am extremely proud of them and what they have done this year. We are building something special here at UAlbany and these guys are a huge part of that.”
Eli Mencer, an Altoona graduate who plays on defense for Albany, finished with four tackles, including two solo and one for loss.
The Great Danes finished their season at 9-5 after winning their first playoff game ever last week.
