49ers promote Altoona native
Altoona’s Kevin Givens has a chance to see his first NFL regular-season game action Sunday.
Givens was promoted to the 53-man roster for the San Francisco 49ers’ matchup at Seattle.
His opportunity came after 49ers reserve defensive lineman Jullian Taylor suffered a right knee injury in Thursday’s practice. Taylor departed Levi’s Stadium on crutches and further tests revealed a torn anterior cruciate ligament.
Givens, 22, is an undrafted rookie out of Penn State who, according to the 49ers website, impressed in the preseason and has been on the practice squad all season, earning San Francisco’s scout team player of the week honors three times.
“Kevin had a good training camp, was close to making our roster,” 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said. “He worked all year to get better and he’s been waiting for this opportunity. He got it yesterday (Thursday).”
Givens, a 2015 graduate of Altoona Area High School, wears No. 90.
Taylor’s loss is the latest in a series that have chipped away at the Niners’ defensive line, a group that served as the team’s backbone for the first part of the season. When Taylor lands on injured reserve, he will join fellow defensive linemen D.J. Jones (ankle), Ronald Blair III (torn ACL) and Damontre Moore (forearm).
San Francisco also this week signed former Penn State defensive tackle Anthony Zettel, who played with Givens at PSU (2013-16) and was a sixth-round pick by Detroit in 2016.
The 49ers (12-3) have clinched an NFC playoff bid and are playing for seeding.
