Lafferty returns to the minors

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Penguins have sent Sam Lafferty to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. The move was announced by the team on Thursday.

Lafferty, a native of Hollidaysburg, made his NHL debut on Oct. 8. He had totaled six points in 10 games for the Penguins, who are currently 8-5-0 and in fourth place in the Metropolitan Division.

According to KDKA’s Bob Pompeani’s Twitter feed, the Penguins’ Evgeni Malkin is expected to make his return Saturday against the Edmonton Oilers, who are first at 9-4-1 in the Pacific Division. Malkin has been out since the first week of the season.

In Lafferty’s 10 games, he was used as a right wing on the fourth line, but had moved up to center on the second line.

He was a healthy scratch in the win over Philadelphia this past Tuesday night which the Penguins won, 7-1. It was the night Alex Galchenyuk returned from injury for Pittsburgh.
