Howsare to play in Grey Cup

Altoona’s Julian Howsare will be competing for the Canadian Football League’s Grey Cup championship on Sunday.

Howsare, 27, is a defensive end for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats (16-3), who will match up with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers (13-7).

Kickoff is Sunday at 6:30 p.m., and the game will be televised on ESPN2. Howsare wears No. 95.

He made 22 tackles on the season, including six sacks, and four tackles on special teams.

“I feel great about the year I had, establishing myself as a starter in this league, and can’t wait to see what opportunities come along,” Howsare texted to the Mirror.

A 2010 Altoona Area High School graduate, Howsare was an undrafted free agent out of Clarion University and played parts of three seasons with the New York Jets and Seattle Seahawks before going to the CFL, where he’s now in his second year with Hamilton.

The Grey Cup began in 1909 and has been played annually since 1920.

“Winning a Grey Cup is the ultimate goal for every team so to be here, it’s very exciting,” Howsare texted. “We have an opportunity to do something special as a team.”
