Locals have tough day at states

YORK — Rockwood junior and District 6 Class 2A girls champion Vileska Gelpi finished as the runner-up for the second time at the PIAA Championships Tuesday at the Heritage Hills Golf Resort.

Gelpi and North East’s Lydia Swan each shot rounds of 76, 75 for a total score of 7-over par in the two-day tournament, but Swan bested Gelpi in a playoff.

Skyler Fox of Riverside won the Class 2A boys title with back-to-back rounds of 72.

Mount Union’s Trey Heffelfinger finished tied for 13th with rounds of 83 and 78.

Philipsburg-Osceola’s Brandon Singer was the highest finisher from the Mirror’s coverage area, tying for 25th with rounds of 84 and 82.

Bedford’s Jared Turner rebounded from a tough round one to shoot 77 Tuesday and finished 27th.

The Mounties’ Chad Frank finished 36th.

Wissahickon freshman Elizabeth Beck won the Class 3A girls title in a playoff, and Central York senior Carson Bacha claimed the Class 3A boys title with back-to-back rounds of 67 and finished 8-under par for the tournament.

The Philipsburg-Osceola boys and Central Cambria girls will compete for the team championships today.
