Lady Lions fall to Peters Twp.

WEXFORD — The Altoona Area High School girls tennis team’s successful season reached an end on Tuesday.

Altoona (15-4), the District 6 champion, was knocked out of the PIAA Class 3A Team Tournament in the first round by District 7 champion Peters Township, 5-0, at the Oxford Athletic Club.

“I’m really proud of the way our girls competed (Tuesday),” Altoona coach Eric Hovan said. “Six of our seven starters will be back next year, so this is a great building point for next season. We had an amazing year. This team was so much fun to coach. I’m already looking forward to next season.”

Peters Township advanced to the PIAA quarterfinals in Hershey on Friday.

Altoona’s No. 1 singles player, senior Alese Rinker, will compete in the PIAA Class 3A Singles Championships in Hershey on Nov. 1.

District 6 Class 2A team champion Central Cambria fell to District 7 runner-up Knoch, 3-0, in the first round of the PIAA Team Tennis Tournament at Gorilla House Gym in Altoona.
