BEA softball loses PIAA title game

UNIVERSITY PARK — Bald Eagle Area’s quest for a state title ended in gut-wrenching fashion.

The District 6 champion Lady Eagles surrendered five runs in the sixth inning, and Pine Grove went on to win the PIAA Class 3A title, 7-3, Friday at Beard Field at the Nittany Lion Softball Park.

The Cardinals completed the season with a perfect 28-0 record and a District 11 championship with a senior-heavy team, many of which played on the 2017 squad that fell in the state finals to South Park.

BEA fell behind 1-0 early on, but bunched together three runs in the third inning when Madison Eckley scored after Mara Hockenberry delayed a steal from first base, baiting the Cardinal catcher into an errant throw. Hockenberry scored on the next at-bat for the lead thanks to an RBI single by Maralee Caldana.

Eagles pitcher Madison Peters drove in Caldana for the third run. Peters also held the Cardinals to just three hits through four innings.
