BG re-scheduled for this morning

Bishop Guilfoyle Catholic’s District 6 Class 2A baseball championship game against top-seeded West Shamokin was postponed Tuesday.

The game is scheduled to be made up this morning at PNG Field at 10 a.m., but the importance of getting the game in as quickly as possible is significant as the losing team must win two games — before Monday — to qualify for the state playoffs.

Either the Marauders or the Wolves will travel to DuBois Thursday at 7 p.m. to play District 9 runner-up Coudersport. The winner of that game would have to play the District 4 runner-up, either Sayre or South Williamsport. Those teams will play in the District 4 Class 2A title game today at 1 p.m. at Bowman Field.

Bishop Guilfoyle coach Tommy Williams told the Mirror Tuesday that if the Marauders are in that game Friday, he was told it will be held at Mount Aloysius College.

The winner of that game begins the state playoffs Monday, meaning the team that loses today could play four times in six days, a tough task for any pitching staff.

Tuesday’s other postponed game, the Class 1A final between Saint Joseph’s and Bishop McCort, will be played today at 1 p.m. at PNG Field, though thunderstorms are again in the forecast.

Mount Union defeated Philipsburg-Osceola, 1-0 in 9 innings, in the Class 3A title game in the first contest of the day before the skies opened up. In District 5, Conemaugh Township defeated Meyersdale, 10-2, in the Class 2A title game. It was the third consecutive championship for the Indians.

In another baseball game today, Bedford will play District 9’s Brookville for the D5-9 Class 3A title in Punxsutawney at 4:30 p.m.

In softball today, top-seeded Chestnut Ridge will take on Bald Eagle Area at Saint Francis University at 5 p.m. in the District 5-6 Class 3A championship game. Prior to that game, Bishop McCort and Marion Center will play for the 2A title at SFU at 2:30, and Meyersdale will play Conemaugh Township in Somerset for the District 5 2A title at 4:30 p.m.

Thursday afternoon, three softball teams from the Mirror’s coverage area will play for titles at Saint Francis when Claysburg-Kimmel takes on top-seeded Glendale in the District 6 1A final at 2:30 and third-seeded Tyrone takes on fourth-seeded Bellefonte in the District 6 4A final at 5.
