Bedford graduate having banner year in the field for Army

Bedford County native August Cook won his second consecutive Patriot League javelin title with a record-breaking throw Friday at Holy Cross University.

Competing for the Army Black Knights, the West Point sophomore’s throw of 237.8 feet set both West Point and Patriot League outdoor records.

The career-best throw from Cook ties him for eighth in the 2019 NCAA Division 1 national rankings for javelin, while surpassing the previous Academy record set by Adam Burke in 2004.

Cook will compete in the NCAA East Qualifier on May 24 in Florida. The top 12 eastern javelin qualifiers will join the west’s 12 best throwers at nationals in June in Texas.

Cook qualified for the 2018 NCAA Championship, in Eugene, Ore., where he finished 22nd.
