Central Cambria grad turns in stellar swim times at IUP

Gabby Gironda, a Central Cambria graduate, set personal career bests in four events recently for the IUP swim team at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championships recently.

In addition to setting new personal marks in the 1650 freestyle, 1,000 freestyle, 400 IM, Gironda was named All-PSAC for her third-place finish in the 200 butterfly and anchored the 800 free relay that finished second and set a new school record for the Crimson Hawks in 7:34.18, out-pacing the previous five-year old record of 7:37.81.

Altoona graduate J.P. Duffy shot a round of 76 recently to help the Saint Vincent golf team to a first-place finish in The Carnegie Mellon University Invitational for the second-straight year.

The Bearcats’ team score of 307 was two strokes ahead of Pitt-Bradford, which tied Saint Vincent the day before at the same venue.

Junior Frank Perehinec led Penn State Altoona with a season-high 14 kills to help the Lions to a 3-1 win recently over Elizabethtown in college volleyball action.

The Altoona graduate also had two aces, one solo block and one assist.

Redshirt senior Abby Wagner, an Altoona graduate, posted a new personal best in the triple jump for Shippensburg University in a match against Richmond University recently.

Wagner’s mark of 41-feet, 81/2 inches improved upon her personal best from the 2017 Paul Kiser Classic by four inches.

That currently stands as the top mark in the nation for the triple jump, essentially guaranteeing her a spot at this May’s NCAA outdoor championships.
