Sarbo advances to 3A quarters

HERSHEY — Altoona sophomore Matt Sarbo had a much better start to this year’s state tournament than he did in last year’s PIAA Class 3A Championships.

Sarbo was dominant on his feet and from the top position in a 20-7 thumping of West Chester East’s Corey Celenza in the first round on Thursday at Hershey’s Giant Center.

It was a far cry from his 14-0 loss to Liberty’s Tai-Reese Flemming at 106 pounds last season.

“I wrestled pretty good,” Sarbo said. “I finished my shots quick, and I just had fun while I was out there. I just went prepared to use everything I had against him. “

“He looked really good out there,” Altoona coach Joel Gilbert said. “He scored some back points, got a lot of takedowns and was very aggressive on his feet. Matt can score a lot of points. When he gets on a roll, watch out. He’s a guy who’s exciting to watch.”

Sarbo is the only area wrestler wrestling in the quarterfinals, which are set for 2:15 p.m.

Hollidaysburg’s Mason McCready (182) and Gus Dellinger (220) lost their first bouts, but they rebounded with consolations wins to stay alive. The second round of consolations are also set for 2:15. The third round of consolations are scheduled for 5 p.m.

“They started out not as expected,” Hollidaysburg coach Christian Harr said. “This round was great for them, so it’s a big confidence booster going into tomorrow.”

Altoona’s Nate Simmers was eliminated with a couple of close decisions at 285.

Celenza did get the opening takedown, but it was all Sarbo after that. Sarbo notched two takedowns and three nearfall points off a tilt to take an 8-3 lead after one period.

“I just tried to get points however I could,” Sarbo said, “and that was a nice transition. It worked well.”

In the second, Sarbo reversed, gave up an escape and got another takedown for a 12-4 lead. He gave up another escape, and he got another takedown for a 14-5 lead after two periods.

Celenza escaped to start the third, and Sarbo hit a slick fireman’s carry to take his opponent to his back for four points and an 18-6 lead.

“The kid was underhooking a lot, and that’s a defense to the underhook,” Gilbert said. “Matt kept good position in there, and a lot of times when you keep good position, that will come. He took what was given to him.”

He added another takedown to get to 20 points.

Sarbo (36-3) faces Kiski Area’s Darren Miller (42-2) in the quarters. Miller rolled to a 12-0 win over Wyoming Valley West’s David Kronkowski. With a win there, Sarbo would be in Saturday morning’s semifinals and assured of another medal.

“I’m just going to try to have fun,” Sarbo said. “I enjoy this place.”

McCready dropped a 5-3 decision to West Scranton’s Jeremy Seymour in the first round. McCready was constantly shooting but he couldn’t finish. With Seymour winning 3-2 in the third, McCready was in another attempt, but Seymour countered and took him down.

McCready bounced back with a 9-3 decision over Wissahickon’s Daniel Keller. McCready (30-6) notched four takedowns to advance to the second round of consolations against Harrisburg’s Southcentral champion Neamiah Diggs (26-5), who was upset, 5-4, by Unionville’s Tyler Mousaw.

“He needs to finish,” Harr said. “He finished well in that second match because he committed to things. Instead of being hesitant and thinking, he just went out there and got it done. That’s the biggest difference between the two.”

Dellinger, a returning eighth-placer, was dropped into the consolations with a 3-2 loss to Norwin’s Ryan Weinzen. Weinzen escaped and took Dellinger down in the second period for the deciding point.

Dellinger (28-8) was up 3-2 in the third period on Marple Newtown freshman Bill Brosko when he took Brosko down to his back with a low-leg cradle and pinned him in 4:04.

“In the first match, he got after it early,” Harr said. “Toward the end of the match, he wasn’t really getting after it as much. He definitely could have pressed the action a little bit more.

“He obviously just beat a pretty decent kid, and he ended up pinning him. It was a big deal for him to get that fall. Hopefully we’re expecting the same tomorrow. You’ve got to take one match at a time and get past that next guy.”

Dellinger will face Dallastown’s Jamal Brandon (41-4), who was upset by Easton’s Andrew Balukas, 7-5, in the first round.

Simmers lost a frenzied 9-7 decision to Bensalem’s John Klewin in the first round. Klewin scored a four-point move at the end of the second off of Simmers’ offense. Down 5-1 in the third, Simmers reversed Klewin to his back for four points to tie the score.

Klewin escaped, and Simmers took him down for a 7-6 lead. After Klewin escaped, he took Simmers down, and Simmers was unable to escape.
