McKeirnan earns two first places

UNIVERSITY PARK — Hollidaysburg Area High School junior Conor McKeirnan enjoyed a big day in the District 6 Swimming Championships on Friday at the Penn State Natatorium.

Huntingdon also had a solid day, taking home three gold medals, while Tyrone also had a first-place finish.

McKeirnan earned two individual first places in Class 3A on the first day of the meet. McKeirnan won the boys 200-yard freestyle event in a time of 1 minute, 45.83 seconds and also won the 100 butterfly in 52.19. It was the second straight year McKeirnan won the 3A 200 freestyle event.

First-place finishers automatically earn spots in the state meet, which will be held March 13-16 at Bucknell University in Lewisburg.

McKeirnan also teamed with Gage Paul, Tyler Gnegy and Nick Helsel to help the Hollidaysburg boys 200 medley relay team earn a second-place finish in 1:45.38, and the Hollidaysburg girls 200 medley relay team of Allison Black, Megan Dinges, Mia LeCrone and Taylor Hileman also finished second in a time of 1:58.61.

Also for Hollidaysburg, Gnegy was third in the boys 100 butterfly (58.96), and the Tigers’ 200 relay team of James Roberts, Bob Burns, Evan Soisson and Carson Bryan was third in 1:38.37.

In Class 2A, on the girls side for Huntingdon, Haley Goldstone won the 50 freestyle in 24.46. For the boys, Nick Buckley won the 50 freestyle (21.10), while the 200 free relay team of Buckley, Anthony Edwards, Ben Atherton and Colby Grubb won in 1:31.94.

Also finishing third were Mallory Woodward, in the 200 IM (2:22.65), Andrew Edwards in the 50 free (23.08), Atherton in the 200 free (1:53.90), the girls medley relay (Woodward, Sydney Houck, Jaelyn Mitchell, Goldstone) in 1:57.72 and the boys medley relay (Marshall Lowe, Jake Tanner, Camden Knode, Grubb) in 1:52.82.

The Tyrone Area boys 200 medley relay team of Jake Decker, Matt Lenze, Songmian Wang and Parker Bayard set a new school record in 1:46.46 to earn a first-place finish and automatically qualify for states.

The Tyrone girls 200 medley relay team of Mae Decker, Fiona McConnell, Madison Coleman and Sarah Hoover earned a second-place finish in 1:57.65. In addition, Wang was second in the boys 200 IM (2:07.48) and third in the 100 butterfly (56.87).

Tyrone had two other individuals earn medals by placing third — McConnell in the girls 200 freestyle (2:07.98) and Coleman in the girls 50 free (25.29).

For the Cambria Heights girls, Maddi Dzurko, took second in the 200 IM (2:20.30) and third in the 100 fly (1:02.92). The 200 IM time was a new school record, breaking the old one also held by Dzurko.
