Coaches: Coquese Washington is 207-165 in her 12th season at Penn State. Lindsay Whalen is off to a solid start in her first season as head coach of the Lady Gophers. A Minnesota alumna, Whalen agreed to the position after retiring after from a 14-year career in professional women’s basketball, having played for the Minnesota Lynx of the WNBA from 2010 to her signing on April 13 of last year. She was drafted in 2004, fourth-overall by the Connecticut Sun. She finished her career with the Lady Gophers in 2004 with 2,285 points, fifth best in Big Ten Conference history.

Notes: The Lady Lions current losing streak extended to five games Thursday with the loss to Northwestern, ending a run of 13 straight victories against the Lady Wildcats. … Senior Amari Carter’s current tally of 913 points puts her 87 away from 1,000 points for her career. Carter needs to average 14.5 through the final six games of the season in order to reach that mark and become the 39th player in program history to do it. She currently averages 9.7 ppg. … After starting league play 2-7, Minnesota has rattled off five wins in a row to improve to 7-7 in the Big Ten, including a 65-45 road win against Purdue Thursday. … Kenisha Bell averages 18.9 ppg with a team-best 104 assists. Destiny Pitts follows with 14.4 ppg. … The Lady Gophers boast the third-best scoring defense in the league, holding teams to an average 58.4 ppg.

Comment: Another tough fight coming up for the Lady Lions. They’re looking desperately for a win, but I don’t think they find it in Minneapolis.

No. 5 UK beats up on No. 1 Vols

LEXINGTON, Ky. — PJ Washington scored 23 points, Keldon Johnson added 19 and No. 5 Kentucky upset No. 1 Tennessee 86-69 Saturday night to end the Volunteers’ 19-game winning streak.

The Wildcats used a 25-7 surge over a little more than seven minutes for a 62-38 lead, providing a cushion that withstood the Volunteers’ 13-0 spurt soon after that cut the advantage in half. Kentucky maintained a double-digit lead to win the highly anticipated matchup of top-five schools.

Kentucky (21-4, 10-2) also avoided a second consecutive SEC loss to stay within reach of co-leader Tennessee (23-2, 11-1), which hadn’t lost since Nov. 23 to No. 2 Kansas.

Jordan Bone had 19 points and Admiral Schofield 17 for the Volunteers, who scored the game’s first basket but trailed afterward.

NO. 2 DUKE 94, NORTH CAROLINA STATE 78: RJ Barrett had Duke’s first triple-double in 13 years, finishing with 23 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists in the second-ranked Blue Devils’ victory over North Carolina State. Zion Williamson scored 32 points on 12-of-16 shooting and Tre Jones added 13 to help the Blue Devils (23-2, 11-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) win their ninth straight.

NO. 4 VIRGINIA 60, NOTRE DAME 54: Kyle Guy scored 22 points, De’Andre Hunter had 20 with 10 rebounds and Virginia withstood a late push by Notre Dame.

NO. 6 MICHIGAN 65, NO. 24 MARYLAND 52: Charles Matthews scored 14 points and Iggy Brazdeikis added 13 to lift Michigan over Maryland.

NO. 8 NORTH CAROLINA 95, WAKE FOREST 57: Cameron Johnson scored 27 points, and North Carolina scored the game’s first 18 points en route to its biggest-ever margin of victory in an Atlantic Coast Conference road game.

NO. 14 KANSAS 78, WEST VIRGINIA 53: Devon Dotson and K.J. Lawson each scored 15 points, and Kansas beat West Virginia (10-15).

NO. 15 TEXAS TECH 86, BAYLOR 61: Jarrett Culver scored 18 points and Davide Moretti added 17 as Texas Tech cruised past short-handed and turnover-prone Baylor.

NO. 16 LOUISVILLE 56, CLEMSON 55: Christen Cunningham scored 16 of his 18 points in the second half to rally Louisville, which hung on in the final seconds.

NO. 17 FLORIDA STATE 69, GEORGIA TECH 47: Christ Koumadje had 10 points and 12 rebounds as Florida State tied a school record with its seventh straight Atlantic Coast Conference win.

NO. 19 LSU 83, GEORGIA 79: Tremont Waters scored 20 points, Ja’vonte Smart added 19 and LSU won its fourth straight game.

NO. 23 IOWA STATE 78, NO. 18 KANSAS STATE 64: Lindell Wigginton hit five 3-pointers and scored 23 points as Iowa State pulled away late to tighten up the Big 12 title race.

NO. 21 IOWA 71, RUTGERS 69: Joe Wieskamp banked in a 3-pointer from the corner with less than a second to play and Iowa posted a miraculous victory over Rutgers for its fourth straight win.

Harris, Tatum, Diallo are All-Star winners

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Brooklyn’s Joe Harris held off Golden State’s Stephen Curry to win the 3-point contest at the NBA’s All-Star Saturday night.

Harris made 12 consecutive shots at one point in the final round on his way to a score of 26 points. Curry was second with 24 in the finals, and Sacramento’s Buddy Hield was third with 19 points.

The Warriors’ star made his first nine shots of the final round, then missed three of five shots from the top of the key.

Stephen Curry won the first round with 27 points out of a possible of 34. Hield was second with 26 points, and Harris finished with 25 to grab the last spot in the finals.

In other events, Boston’s Jayson Tatum hit a 3-pointer from just beyond midcourt to beat Atlanta’s Trae Young in the final round of the skills competition.

Tatum defeated Memphis’ Mike Conley in the first round, then topped Denver’s Nikola Jokic in the semifinals. He was slightly behind Young going into the 3-pointer, the final shot of the event, and decided he needed to try the long shot to get one in before Young could shoot for the title.

Oklahoma Cityás Hamidou Diallo won the slam dunk competition.

Going over Shaquille OáNeal in the first round, then getting a boost from rapper Quavo in the finale, Diallo soared to the crown by topping New Yorkás Dennis Smith Jr.

Diallo topped Smith 88-85 in the finale. Charlotteás Miles Bridges and Atlantaás John Collins went out in the first round.
