Hollidaysburg athlete receives rugby honor

HOLLIDAYSBURG — Gus Dellinger, a standout football player from Hollidaysburg Area High School, will be traveling to the US Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif. as part of the USA Rugby All-American program.

Dellinger leaves on Wednesday, Dec. 26, and will return onTuesday, Jan. 1. He will train with other All-Americans at a winter camp. The USA U18 boy’s team will play Canada’s U18 team in two games during this period.

Previously invited to the USA Rugby ELRA camp in Arizona, and then in Toronto, Dellinger has been selected to be one of 33 U18 players from across the nation to represent the US in international play. The ELRA camp is a larger tryout camp, with selections narrowed to the high school All-American team. Players are evaluated by a team of coaches, and upgraded to the AA team.

“What an accomplishment for Gus” Blair United/Hollidaysburg Area coach Andy Haines said. “This opens up opportunities for Gus to represent the USA in the World Cup, and play professionally here or overseas. Several high level college rugby programs, as well as football programs, are talking to Dellinger about furthering either career.”

The All American squad represents the United States in international tournaments, as well as The Rugby World Cup for their ages.
