Kaup takes her age group in triathlon

Altoona native Courtney Kaup captured first place in the 40-44 age bracket at the International Triathlon Union competition in Denmark earlier this month.

Competing for Team USA Triathlon, Kaup finished as the ninth woman overall with a combined time of 2:51.09 — 16:15 in the 1,000-meter swim, 1:39.13 on the bicycle (29 kilometers) and 51:33 in the run (10.1 kilometers).

Kaup was the only American woman to finish in the top 10, and she finished more than three minutes ahead of her closest competitor, Lise Sohl Jeppesen of Denmark, who finished 2:54.51.

“It was a great off-road event combining a Svenborg Harbor swim, single track mountain biking and trail running,” Kaup wrote in an email. “The race was a good test of bike handling skills. I was able to finish strong on the run, only to find out at the finish line that I had won. It was a great surprise.”

Kaup, who resides in Richmond, VT., turns 40 in September and thus competed in the 40-44 group.

She is a former standout basketball player at Altoona Area High School and George Mason University.
