Five win on DPLWS first day

There were five first-round winners on Saturday during opening-day action at the 2018 Dean Patterson Little World Series at the Logan Township Youth Baseball Association Field.

L.S. Fiore beat Peterman’s Florist, 16-0, in three innings as Aaron Smearman had two hits and two RBIs. He also got the win and struck out five. Park Home downed Penn England Farms, 14-2 behind Nick Slogik, who hit three home runs and drove in nine runs.

Fiore True Value downed Kabello Contracting, 11-7, behind Bryce Eberhart, who had two hits, including a home run. Winning pitcher Gabe Harshberger struck out five.

Wolf Furniture downed Caracciolo’s, 13-1, behind three hits each from Dante LaRocco, Ryan Helsel and Landon Douglass. Two of LaRocco’s hits were doubles. Greenwood Meadows beat Parson Copier Care, 13-1 behind winning pitcher Hayden Tipton, who struck out seven in three innings. Talan Palladini and Brody Gartmann each had three hits for the winners.

The final game of the day, Razor’s Edge vs. Penn Med, was postponed because of the weather. It will be played this morning at 10 a.m. at the Logan Township field. For a complete list of today’s other games, please see the scoreboard page on B9.

Kelley Federation League

Game 2 of the George B. Kelley Federation League championship — between Tyrone Legion and Martin Oil — was postoponed Saturday night at Vets Field because of rain.

Game 2 will be played tonight at 7 p.m. back at Vets Field with Game 3 now on Monday at Vets Field at 7 p.m. Tyrone Legion won the best-of-5 series opener on Friday night, 6-1.

Greater City League

Locker Room improved to 18-2 in the Greater City League, thanks to 16-6 win in five innings over Shields Trophy at Geesey Park.

Winning pitcher Kevin Scholly,who struck out six and walked just one, also had two hits and three RBIs in a game the winners scored 10 runs in the first inning. Matt Hershey added three hits and three RBIs while teammate Joe Glass added three hits and two RBIs.

Altoona Teener Major

Mason Criswell’s walk-off single scored Brandon Murphy and Bryce Martellacci and lifted Bavarian Hall to a 2-1 win over Furrer Beverage in game one of the Altoona Teener Major League division quarterfinals.

Bavarian Hall took a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series and will attempt to advance to the semifinals with a win in game 2 tonight. The first pitch is set for 8 p.m.

Martellacci had four hits for Bavarian Hall, while Colton Geibel picked up the win.

Joe Bukosky and Bradin Gattrell each had three hits and two RBIs as McMullen Furniture knocked off CoBRHs II, 12-3, at Seitz Field.

McMullen won the losers’ bracket and advanced to today’s championship game against Gingrich Insurance at 3 p.m. Gingrich defeated CoBRHs II, 14-1, on Thursday to reach the finals.

Gattrell struck out six in the win for McMullen Furniture.

American Legion

LILLY — Clearfield won the American Legion Division II Southwest Regional, thanks to a twinbill sweep over Lilly, 9-5, and 4-3.

In the 9-5 opener, which featured 16 errors combined by both teams, winning pitcher Bryce Timko struck out 10. Lilly got two RBIs from Tanner Perrone and three hits from Dallas Hite.

In the nightcap, Lilly got three hits from Hite and two more from Perrone in a 4-3 loss. Clearfield advances to the state tournament next weekend in Williamsport.
