Lady Bulldogs, Lady Mounties have date at PSU

Huntingdon baseball headed to Mount

A pair of area softball squads will be playing at Penn State, while the Huntingdon baseball team finally will be using a venue it had expected to see when the PIAA playoffs begin in those sports on Monday.

Claysburg-Kimmel and Philipsburg-Osceola will comprise the second half of a quadrupleheader at Nittany Lion Softball Park. The Lady Bulldogs take the field at 5 p.m. in a Class 1A game with Sullivan County. That’s scheduled to be followed by a 3A matchup pitting the Lady Mounties against Delone Catholic at 7:30.

The early games at Penn State have Mifflin County facing Baldwin in 6A at 11:30 a.m. and Mount Union taking on Frazier in 2A at 2:30 p.m.

Two other Mirror area softball teams will start a path that they hope leads them to Penn State for the PIAA finals. District 6 Class 3A runner-up Central travels to North Allegheny High School in Wexford to play Southmoreland at 5 p.m. District 6 Class 1A runner-up Glendale, meanwhile, will trek to Peters Township High School in McMurray to play West Greene at 2 p.m.

Only two baseball teams from the Mirror coverage area will be in action. Huntingdon, which made it to the state semifinals last year before getting sidelined by eventual champion Central, will open this postseason against Avonworth in the 3A bracket at 4 p.m. at Mount Aloysius College.

Mount Aloysius was one of the fields the Bearcats were scheduled to use this season as an alternative home while their high school field was renovated. However, Huntingdon was able to utilize Juniata College for all of its home games, so this is the first time the Bearcats actually will be playing at the Mount.

Meanwhile, D6-2A runner-up Bellwood-Antis is headed to Central Columbia High School for a 1 p.m. game with South Williamsport.

In other PIAA baseball games of regional interest on Monday, Southern Huntingdon meets Serra Catholic in Class 2A at Hollidaysburg at 4, Bellefonte faces East Pennsboro at Philipsburg in Class 3A at 4, Saint Joseph’s tackles Southern Fulton in Class 1A at Everett at 4, Bald Eagle Area plays Moniteau in Class 4A at DuBois’ Showers Field at 5:30, Homer-Center faces Union in 1A at White Township Park in Indiana at 4, Conemaugh Township takes on Johnsonburg in Class 2A at Somerset at 4, and Berlin Brothersvalley encounters Oswayo Valley at DuBois’ Showers Field at 3.

In other PIAA softball contests involving regional teams, Bellefonte plays Belle Vernon in Class 4A at Peters Township at 2, Meyersdale meets DuBois Central Catholic in Class 1A at Somerset at 4, and Conemaugh Township takes on Upper Dauphin in Class 2A at Lebanon Valley College at 5.
