Juniata falls in round 2 of playoffs

CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. — The Juniata College women’s basketball team saw its season come to an end on Saturday, losing to Thomas More, 83-50, in the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament.

Morgan Instone had 11 points and two steals for the Eagles, who finished the year at 23-5.

Gracie Stauffer added seven points and five rebounds off the bench in a game Juniata trailed, 28-9, after one quarter of play.

Bethany Spencer had six points and six rebounds. Dani Atkinson had five points, five rebounds and two steals. Carmella Bickel had five points and two rebounds. Rachael Anstine had four points and two rebounds while Veronica Cosmopolis and Kaeana Rebert had three points apiece.

The Saints came out strong as they nailed two 3s on their way to a 10-0 run early on. Cosmopolis nailed a wide- open 3 off a pass from Anstine to put the Eagles on the board. Atkinson answered another Saints 3 with a jumper to make it 13-5. The Saints continued their hot shooting as two Instone free throws and a Spencer jumper made it 26-9. The Saints knocked down two free throws near the end of the first quarter as Juniata trailed 28-9 after one.

Stauffer scored on a putback of her own miss to make it 28-11 to open the second quarter. Later, Atkinson grabbed an offensive rebound and dished it to Madison Colyer for a jumper to make it 39-16. Spencer scored the final bucket of the half for Juniata with a triple as the Eagles went into the locker room down, 42-19.

The Saints got 18 points and 10 assists from point guard Madison Temple while teammate Abby Owings added 15 points. Nikki Kiernan contributed 14 points and eight rebounds.

Game notes: The Saints improved to 27-1. … Juniata finished with the second-most wins in program history. … The Eagles battled in the second half as Thomas More held just a nine-point edge overall, 40-31. … Thomas More shot 50 percent from the arc and scored 34 points off of Juniata turnovers.
