Altoona sweeps past Penn Cambria

h.s. girls volleyball

Led by Kaila Clawson’s 33 digs and Maddie Benton’s 19 assists, the unbeaten Altoona Area High School girls volleyball team improved to 2-0 by posting a 25-20, 25-23, 25-22 win over Penn Cambria at the AAHS Fieldhouse on Thursday.

Kenzie Irwin had nine kills and three aces, and Ireland McClellan had nine kills and three blocks for Altoona. Penn Cambria (2-1) got 10 service points from Macy Sral, 11 digs from Kylie Guzic, 16 assists from Laken Guzic and eight kills from Makalyn Clapper.

Records: Penn Cambria (2-1); Altoona (2-0).

JV: Penn Cambria, 17-25, 25-22, 15-11. Altoona jayvees are 1-1, Penn Cambria jayvees are 1-2.

Carroll cruises

BOALSBURG — Bishop Carroll swept Saint Joseph’s Academy, 25-8, 25-16, 25-9, behind 17 service points from Anna Haigh.

Kayla Repko had 25 assists, and Caroline Ratchford added nine kills.

Kamryn Mercer led Bellwood with 15 kills and five blocks, Sydney Lechner had 31 assists, Sakeria Haralson delivered 11 kills and four blocks, and Bella Kies had 13 service points, including three aces.

Kristen Hewitt collected nine kills for Glendale, and Olivia Reese added six digs.

WILLIAMSBURG — Corryne Weyandt had 11 service points and 10 assists, and Mackenzie Clemons had eight service points, six digs and four aces as Claysburg-Kimmel improved to 2-0 by topping Williamsburg, 25-17, 25-14, 25-17.

Emily Claar had five kills, four aces and two blocks, Megan Hartman scored eight service points, Elizabeth Dodson had six assists, and Justinna Brown had seven kills for Claysburg.

N. Bedford rallies

LOYSBURG — Northern Bedford fell behind two sets but rallied past Southern Fulton, 17-25, 19-25, 25-16, 25-22, 15-5.

Kaylee Bowers led the way with 24 service points, and Shyann Zelanko had 16. Maddie Cherry had four kills, and Mara Laird added three kills.

JV: Southern Fulton, 2-1.

Valley spikes MU

ALEXANDRIA — Kim Harker had 13 service points, and Emma Musser had nine blocks, eight kills and four service points as Juniata Valley defeated Mount Union, 25-22, 25-19, 25-17.

Valley (1-1) also got eight kills apiece from Halee Smith and Katie Belinda, and 22 assists from Hayden Taylor.

Mattie Cherry had 13 assists, and Ebonee Rice had 13 digs.

BELLEFONTE — Bellefonte swept Central, 31-29, 25-11, 27-25, despite 32 assists from Central’s Erin Brumbaugh, eight service points from Chelsey Dick and eight kills apiece from Katie Harker and Bethany Wyant.

JV: Bellefonte won, 28-26, 13-25, 15-10.

Ridge rolls

NEW PARIS — Chestnut Ridge defeated McConnellsburg, 21-25, 25-21, 25-22, 25-20, thanks to 21 kills by Lydia Mock, who also added 13 service points.

Emily Parks added 16 assists for the Lady Lions.

Portage posts win

JOHNSTOWN — Kylee McCarty had 15 service points, while Summer Viscusi collected 13 service points and 11 digs to lead Portage to a 13-25, 25-18, 25-21, 25-20 win over Conemaugh Valley.

Portage (2-0) got 11 digs apiece from Bella Strosnyder and Marisa Ference, nine kills and four blocks from Caitlyn Papcun and 11 service points from Rhianna Benton.
