B-A advances
BLAIRSVILLE — With a lower seed and a road matchup on the docket, coming off a nail-biting finish several days before, most teams would feel pressured knowing a championship berth was at stake.
Most teams, though, don’t have a lineup as potent as Bellwood-Antis.’
Nevin Wood overcame a short start on the mound by smacking a pair of doubles, Travis Luensmann and Sawyer Kline entered to complete a five-hitter, and the visiting Blue Devils racked up 17 hits to roll past second-seeded Blairsville, 12-5, in a PIAA District 6 Class 2A semifinal-round baseball game Tuesday at WyoTech Park.
Bellwood-Antis (17-4), the third seed, which survived a 5-4 thriller over Bishop Guilfoyle in the quarterfinals, advanced to play Bishop McCort for the district title Friday or Saturday at PNG Field. The Crushers routed No. 1-seed Portage, 9-2, but after knocking off Blairsville (15-4), the Blue Devils have no reason to feel like underdogs.
“(Blairsville) is a good team,” Bellwood-Antis coach Steve Conlon said. “Their record was good, they had good stats. We knew they were a quality team. You just have to go on the road and do what you can do, get a win, and that’s what we did.”
Bellwood-Antis claimed a 3-0 first inning lead before allowing the Bobcats to storm back in the bottom of the frame. Wood walked the first two batters he faced, allowed a singled to load the bases and surrendered a three-run, no-out double to Blairsville’s Ryan Shirley that knotted the score at 3-all before the Blue Devils pulled their ace.
Luensmann retired 3-of-4 batters to end the inning, but not before Shirley gave the Bobcats a 4-3 lead when he scored on a groundout to first.
“Nevin, our senior pitcher, it’s rare for him to throw like that,” Conlon said. “So we thought we’d make the quick change. This could be your last game — so use them all today — and I thought Travis, being a freshman, coming in there held is own for a while.”
Bellwood-Antis reclaimed the lead, 5-4, with a pair of runs in the third, and Blairsville forged a 5-all tie with its final run in the bottom of the inning before the Devils finally pulled away with five runs in the fourth.
With one out, Brendan Kowalski singled, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch before Trent Walker drew a walk. Joey Padula followed with a one-run single to score Kowalski and give the Blue Devils a one-run lead, 6-5, and after Kline walked to load the bases, Jordan McCracken plated a pair of runs with a single that increased the advantage the three. Jack Showalter added a two-run double two at-bats later.
Kowalski singled, tripled and scored four runs to lead Bellwood. Walker singled twice, doubled and added a pair of RBIs, and Kline singled, doubled and plated a pair of runners. Wood finished 3-for-4, and Luensmann tripled and had two RBIs.
“They did a phenomenal job putting the bat on the ball,” Blairsville coach Mark Zerfoss said. “I would assume this was one of their better hitting games. Perfect timing for them; bad timing for us. But you can’t take anything away from them.”
Luensmann earned the win with a pair of strikeouts over three innings, and Kline closed the game in four innings of hitless relief.
Shirley took the loss.
