QB O’Korn heading to Michigan
John O’Korn is transferring a little bit closer to home.
The former Huntingdon Area High School quarterback who started at the University of Houston will be part of Jim Harbaugh’s first team at Michigan, O’Korn’s father, Gary, confirmed to the Mirror on Thursday.
The younger O’Korn was asked not to do interviews at this time and the Michigan coaches are not permitted to talk about transfers who still are at other schools, but O’Korn did release a message via social media.
“Can’t wait to play for @CoachJim4UM @CoachJeddFisch in the BIG HOUSE! #GoBlue,” O’Korn tweeted.
O’Korn finished his prep career at St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. after seeing significant time as a sophomore at Huntingdon.
He became the starter at Houston as a redshirt freshman and was named the American Athletic Conference rookie of the year in 2013 when he passed for 3,117 yards and 28 touchdowns with only 10 interceptions.
He completed 58.1 percent of his passes as a freshman and led the Cougars to an 8-5 record, including a loss to James?Franklin’s Vanderbilt team in the BBVA?Compass Bowl.
O’Korn entered his sophomore year on the Davey O’Brien and Maxwell Award watch lists. However, he was replaced as the Cougars’ quarterback by dual-threat signal-caller Greg Ward after starting the first five games of the 2014 campaign.
His completion percentage slipped to 52.0 and he was intercepted eight times while throwing six touchdowns. He played in only one of Houston’s final eight games of the season and attempted just one pass in that time.
As a transfer, the 6-foot-4, 220-pound O’Korn will have to sit out next season and become eligible in 2016.
The Wolverines graduate starting quarterback Devin Gardner but do return backup Shane Morris. Michigan also signed two quarterbacks as part of its 2015 recruiting class on Wednesday.
