Pirates prospect watch
OF Jack Suwinski
Height/weight: 6-2, 215
Bio: Born July 29, 1998 (23) in Chicago
Acquired: Came to Pirates last year from Padres in Adam Frazier trade
Career: Made his pro debut in 2016 and is rated as the Pirates’ No. 30 prospect by MLB.com. Joined the Curve last season and batted .252 with four homers and 21 RBIs 45 games. He had 15 homers and 37 RBIs at Double-A San Antonio before the trade.
What they’re saying: “Really strong reports on the makeup and work ethic. Obviously, getting to the power some this year in Double-A. Solid defender in the outfield. Feel excited about adding another potentially strong bat at the upper levels, and looking forward to getting to know Jack better.” — Pirates GM Ben Cherington, to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, on Suwinski after the trade last year.
The bottom line: There’s a lot of potential with Suwinski, and the 19 homers last year in Double-A were a good showing. He had a .949 OPS at San Antonio but just .750 for the Curve, so we didn’t get to see him at his best in Altoona.
