From Mirror reports

READING — The season is four months old and, thanks to yet another in a long, long line of Eastern League scheduling quirks, the Curve finally played Reading for the first time Friday night.

If that sounds strange, consider this doozy: Reading and Trenton are in the same division, and yet they didn’t play each other at all during the first half of the EL season. This is the first year, remember, that the league has split into two halves, and yet two division rivals separated by only 80 miles didn’t play each other at all over the first 2 ¢ months.

After waiting four months to face Reading, the Curve had to wait an additional 93 minutes Friday night because of a rain delay. Once they finally did play, the Curve jumped out to an early two-run run lead but could not hold on as the Fightin Phils rallied for a 5-3 win at FirstEnergy Stadium.

Reading snapped a 2-2 tie in the sixth inning on an RBI single by Jose Gomez. The Fightin Phils added two more insurance runs in the seventh inning to seal the win.

Jonathan Hennigan (3-3) picked up the victory in relief for Reading. Curve starter Sean Brady (3-10) took the loss, allowing three runs — two earned — over six innings.

Jakob Hernandez pitched the final two innings for Reading to earn his second save.

New reliever Cody Ponce, acquired by the Pirates in this week’s trade with the Brewers for pitcher Jordan Lyles, made his Curve debut Friday. He allowed two runs in the seventh inning, both scoring on a double by Mickey Moniak.

Oneil Cruz tripled and scored in the first inning for the Curve, and Brett Pope had an RBI double in the second. Chris Sharpe’s sacrifice fly in the eighth scored Altoona’s final run.
