Cervelli rehabbing in Altoona today
For the second straight season, Francisco Cervelli will be making a rehab appearance in Altoona — and the plan is for him to catch.
After suffering his sixth concussion since 2011 back in May, there were some reports that suggested Cervelli would give up catching for good, but he quickly shot down those rumors and his journey back to catching at PNC Field will begin on Sunday at Peoples Natural Gas Field.
“He’s going to catch seven innings tomorrow, that’s the only thing that I was told,” Curve manager Michael Ryan said.
Nothing is official yet, but Ryan said he expects Cervelli to be in Altoona just for today’s game and that he will likely head to Triple-A Indianapolis as the Curve have an off day on Monday and then head to Harrisburg.
Cervelli has only appeared in 34 games for the Pirates this season and hit just .193 in 109 at-bats.
Cervelli’s rehab appearance is just the second the Curve have had this season. Reliever Clay Holmes, who appeared twice out of the bullpen this week, is the only other.
