Baysox homer dampens Vieaux’s performance

Eastern League: Bowie 3, Altoona 2

BOWIE, Md. — Curve starter Cam Vieaux had a no-hitter for 52/3 innings Saturday night, then the only hit he allowed wound up winning the game for Bowie.

Carlos Perez drilled a three-run homer to break up the no-no, and that carried the Baysox to a 3-2 win over Altoona at Prince George’s Stadium. Bowie had only two hits on the night, but that was enough to win.

Oneil Cruz hit a solo homer for the Curve in the fourth and an RBI double in the sixth for a 2-0 lead.

Vieaux was in command until the sixth, when he lost his command in a costly manner.

The lefty retired the first two Bowie hitters in the sixth, but he followed up with back-to-back walks to Ryan McKenna and Anderson Feliz. Perez came up next, and Vieaux made a mistake on an 0-2 pitch that was belted over the wall in left.

Vieaux (3-4) took the tough-luck loss, giving up just one hit over six innings. He struck out three but walked four.

Michael Baumann (5-2) won for Bowie, holding the Curve to two runs — one earned — on four hits over six innings. Cristian Alvarado finished it off in the ninth for his 10th save.

The Curve had only four hits — two by Cruz — so the teams combined for just six on the night.

Oliva honored

Curve center fielder Jared Oliva, clearly the team’s best player over the course of the entire season, has been selected to the Eastern League postseason All-Star team.

Voting was done by EL managers, coaches and media.

Oliva is fourth in the league in hitting (.289) and fifth in hits (118) and runs (66). He’s also second with 33 stolen bases.

Since June 3, Oliva has been terrific, hitting .343 with a .408 on-base percentage.
