Curve miss chance to gain on Baysox
BOWIE, Md. — The Curve came here hoping to get back in the playoff race, but the first two games have buried them in an even bigger hole.
Bowie erupted for seven runs in the fifth inning Friday night and pounded Altoona, 11-3, at Prince George’s Stadium. The Curve, who also lost Thursday, 1-0, have dropped five of six and now trail the Baysox by 6¢ games in the Western Division standings.
Altoona has made the playoffs four consecutive years, but that streak is now in major jeopardy.
The Curve scored a pair of runs in the first inning and got a solo homer from Bligh Madris in the third for a 3-1 lead. Lefty Domingo Robles carried that lead into the fifth, but Bowie began its comeback with three straight singles to load the bases.
Preston Palmeiro, son of former major league star Rafael, scored the go-ahead run on a single by Ryan McKenna. The Baysox kept up the pressure in the inning and ran the lead to 8-3.
Robles (2-3) allowed eight runs — five earned — on eight hits over 4ª innings for the loss. The Baysox added three more runs off reliever Yeudy Garcia, whose ERA is now 6.00.
Zac Lowther (11-5) won for Bowie, giving up three runs on four hits over seven innings.
Jared Oliva had an RBI double and Logan Hill a run-scoring single in the first inning for the Curve.
First baseman Jerrick Suiter was placed on the injured list Friday with a right groin strain. His roster spot was taken by Bralin Jackson, who was activated off the IL.
