Curve score five in ninth to stun SeaWolves
ERIE — The Curve rallied for one of their most improbable victories in years Monday night, scoring five runs in the ninth inning and hitting back-to-back home runs to stun Erie.
Altoona trailed by four entering the ninth before loading the bases with no outs. A run scored on a groundout by Logan Hill, then Hunter Owen drilled a three-run homer to tie the game.
Bligh Madris followed with a homer for the decisive run in a 9-8 win over the SeaWolves at UPMC Park.
Owen moved into a tie for the Eastern League lead with 13 homers, and his 40 RBIs top the circuit. He also had a triple Monday and is batting .309, plus he won Saturday’s game at home with a walk-off two-run homer in the ninth against New Hampshire.
Madris belted just his second homer of the season, and it was a huge one on a 2-2 pitch that capped the Curve’s comeback.
Altoona trailed 8-3 entering the eighth inning before storming all the way back. A bases-loaded walk by Brett Pope in the eighth made it 8-4 before the ninth-inning rally.
Erie had 15 hits, matching the most allowed by the Curve in a game this season, and all nine starters had at least one hit. The home team appeared to be on its way to victory after scoring four runs in the seventh for the 8-3 cushion.
The SeaWolves’ big inning came right after Curve manager Michael Ryan had been ejected for arguing with the umpires. Ryan has now been ejected three times this season, and ironically, the Curve have won all three games.
Vicente Campos (2-2) won in relief for the Curve, while Angel German finished it off in the ninth for his second save.
Will Vest (1-3) lost in relief for Erie, giving up five runs.
