Starter Heaney tagged with third loss of spring

From Mirror, wire reports

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. — Andrew Heaney dropped to 0-3 in the spring for the Pittsburgh Pirates in a 5-2 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays in Grapefruit League action Wednesday.

Heaney allowed three runs on six in hits in four-plus innings of work. He gave up all three in the second inning, but pitched shutout ball in the first, third and fourth inning. He struck out two and did not walk a batter.

Colin Holderman faced two batters in relief and struck out both batters.

The Pirates (14-11-1) got two hits each out of Ji Hwan Bae, Jack Suwinski and Henry Davis. Bae is 16-for-36 this spring. Teammate Tommy Pham got his first hit of the spring, too.

Pittsburgh plays Boston at 6:05 tonight. Mitch Keller will pitch for the Pirates.

Ohtani homers

TOKYO — Shohei Ohtani hit a solo homer in his return to the Tokyo Dome, Roki Sasaki threw three eventful innings in his big-league debut and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Chicago Cubs 6-3 on Wednesday night to sweep the two-game series in Japan.

Kiké Hernández hit a two-run homer and Tommy Edman added a solo shot. Ohtani’s homer in the fifth barely cleared the right-center fence and the call was reviewed by umpires before being confirmed, giving the Dodgers a 6-2 lead.

Sasaki gave up one run and one hit while striking out three, but also walked five batters, including a free pass that forced in a run. Landon Knack (1-0) got the win, pitching two scoreless innings of relief.

Alex Vesia handled the ninth to earn the save after working out of a two-out jam. Shortstop Miguel Rojas made a stellar defensive play for the final out.

Webpage restored

A Department of Defense webpage describing baseball and civil rights icon Jackie Robinson’s military service was restored Wednesday after it was missing earlier in the day.

That development came after pages honoring a Black Medal of Honor winner and Japanese American service members were taken down — the Pentagon said that was a mistake — amid the department’s campaign to strip out content singling out the contributions by women and minority groups, which the Trump administration considers “DEI.”

The page on Robinson includes biographical information about his Army service during World War II.

Starting at $2.99/week.
