Skenes limits Yanks

BRADENTON, Fla. — Paul Skenes struck out five while allowing one run in four innings of work as the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the New York Yankees, 9-1, in Grapefruit League action on Tuesday.

Skenes gave up four hits and walked two in going the longest distance of any Pirates starter to date this spring.

Colin Hoderman had two strikeouts in a scoreless inning of relief, as did teammate Yohan Ramirez.

Ji Hwan Bae went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two runs scored to raise his spring average to .455. The Pirates scored four runs in the third inning. Oneil Cruz hit his third homer of the spring in the frame. He finished with three RBIs.

Nick Gonzalez had two hits and two RBIs to go with two hits from Billy Cook, including a home run. Adam Frazier also added two RBIs.

The Pirates are off today but will play the Twins on Thursday. Bailey Falter is expected to start for Pittsburgh against Minnesota’s Bailey Ober.

On the move

The Pirates optioned RHP Braxton Ashcraft, RHP Mike Burrows, RHP Chase Shugart, INF Liover Peguero, INF Tsung-Che Cheng and INF/OF Enmanuel Valdez to Triple-A Indianapolis.

In addition, RHP Isaac Mattson, RHP Ryder Ryan, RHP Eddy Yean, C Aaron McKeithan, C Omar Alfonzo and INF Malcom Nuñez have been reassigned to minor league spring training.

There are now 50 players remaining in camp.

Roberts extended

GLENDALE, Ariz. — Dave Roberts has a signed a four-year contract extension to manage the defending World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers through 2029, the team announced Tuesday.

Multiple reports on Monday said it was worth $32.4 million. At that figure he could have the highest average salary among managers, topping a five-year deal in 2024 for Chicago Cubs manager Craig Counsell worth more than $40 million.

Roberts heads into his 10th season at the helm with the highest winning percentage in major league history at .627 (851-507). The 52-year-old manager guided the team to World Series titles last year and in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season.
