Manning ‘likely’ starter for NY against Eagles

The Associated Press

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J — New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones was kept out of practice Wednesday with a high right ankle sprain, and coach Pat Shurmur says Eli Manning “very likely” will start Monday night against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Shurmur adds that Manning could very well be the starter for the rest of the season. The rookie Jones has been the starter since the third game of the season, which Giants won 32-31 at Tampa Bay. They beat Washington the next week and have lost eight straight games since. The first-round draft pick has completed 61% of his passes (228 of 370) for 2,374 yards and 18 touchdowns with 11 interceptions.

Jones stood on the sideline Wednesday wearing a boot on his right foot. Manning, the team’s starter since 2004, started for the first two games this season, completing 56 of 89 passes for 556 yards and two TDs with two interceptions.

Cleveland Browns

BEREA, Ohio — Cleveland Browns starting left tackle Greg Robinson cleared concussion protocol and is practicing after missing one game.

Robinson sat out Sunday’s 20-13 loss at Pittsburgh and his absence hurt as the Browns (5-7) struggled to protect quarterback Baker Mayfield, who was sacked five times and under constant pressure. The No. 2 overall pick in 2014, Robinson has started 10 of Cleveland’s 12 games.

Mayfield injured his right throwing hand when he struck it on Steelers linebacker Bud Dupree’s facemask before halftime, but coach Freddie Kitchens doesn’t expect the second-year QB to be limited this week. He played the entire second half wearing a glove and couldn’t rally the Browns, who are on the fringes of playoff contention.

Carolina Panthers

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Panthers quarterback Cam Newton will have surgery on his injured left foot next week, interim coach Perry Fewell said on Wednesday.

Newton suffered a Lisfranc injury in the preseason and started two games in the regular season before being placed on injured reserve.

Fewell said he had no other details about the procedure or how long it will take for Newton to recover.

Carolina must make a decision on Newton’s future after the season. Newton will cost $21.2 million under the salary cap next season, but the team can save $19 million by trading or releasing him.

Owner David Tepper says the team will wait to see how Newton recovers before making any decisions about his future.

Fewell also said Kyle Allen will continue to start Sunday when the Panthers visit the Falcons. Atlanta beat Carolina 29-3 last month and Allen threw four interceptions and was sacked five times. Allen is 5-5 this season as the team’s starter and his backup is third-round draft pick Will Grier.

Indianapolis Colts

INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis Colts claimed kicker Chase McLaughlin off waivers amid Adam Vinatieri’s continuing struggles.

McLaughlin, a rookie from Illinois, has appeared in four games with the Los Angeles Chargers and three with San Francisco this seaoson. He’s made 13 of 17 field goals and all 15 extra points. The 46-year-old Vinatieri, meanwhile, has had one of the worst seasons of his career. He’s missed 14 kicks — eight field goals and six extra points. And he missed three field goals in last weekend’s 31-17 loss to division rival Tennessee.

The Titans blocked two kicks, returning the second 63 yards for the go-ahead touchdown with 5:02 left in the game.

Colts coach Frank Reich has continued to insist he has complete faith in the NFL’s career scoring leader.

Kansas City Chiefs

ATLANTA — Kansas City Chiefs running back LeSean McCoy and his former girlfriend have reached a settlement in a lawsuit she filed against him, court records show.

Delicia Cordon filed the lawsuit last year accusing McCoy of failing to protect her from a violent July 2018 home invasion at a home he owns in Milton, just outside Atlanta. Cordon was bloodied and beaten, and $133,000 worth of jewelry was stolen from the home.

McCoy, who played for the Buffalo Bills at the time, was not at the home at the time. Cordon later amended the suit to accuse McCoy of physically abusing her and orchestrating the attack.
