Lady Lions’ seventh-inning rally falls short

PIAA 3A Softball: Clearfield 4, Chestnut Ridge 3

DUBOIS — Chestnut Ridge rallied from a four run deficit to score three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning on Monday afternoon at Heindl Memorial Field in DuBois, but it wasn’t enough as they fell to Clearfield, 4-3, in first round action of the PIAA Class 3A state softball playoffs.

The Lady Lions pounded out seven hits against Lady Bison freshman Emma Hipps and even put the tying run on third base in the seventh. But Hipps got a strikeout to end the game.

“We talked about it being our last chance,” Chestnut Ridge coach Greg Lazor said. “This team will not quit. They have come from behind so many times this year. They had some nice comebacks. Obviously, it didn’t happen today but there was no doubt in my mind that they were not going to roll over and quit.”

Clearfield (13-9) was designated as the visitors after losing the coin flip in the pregame ceremony. But the loss may have actually turned out to be in the Lady Bison’s favor, as they scored an early run and looked confident the rest of the way.

Karly Rumsky got things going by smacking a single into right field. She moved to second on a stolen base before going to third on a groundout by Morgan Cheek.

A wild pitch by Chestnut Ridge starter Attie Milliron allowed Rumsky to slide into home safely for the first run of the game.

“We came out and got on the board there in the first inning and that kind of set the tone,” Lady Bison coach Derek Danver said.

Emma Hipps was left stranded after a one-out triple.

Hipps got through the bottom of the first inning on just 13 pitches as Lydia Mock singled, but left first early trying to steal and was called out. Hipps then struck out the next two batters swinging to end the threat.

“Coach (Harlan) Funk and I were talking, and we thought they (Chestnut Ridge) would be the best offensive team we’ve played all season,” Danver said.

The Lady Bison left runners on second and third in the top of the second before breaking through again in the top of the third.

Hipps had a one-out single and moved to second on a steal. A single by Lauren Ressler sent her to third, before she alertly slid home on another wild pitch by Milliron.

The 2-0 lead held through the next few innings, as Hipps even worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the third.

Clearfield added a third run in the top of the sixth as Kyra Mollura reached on an error. She moved to second when Casey English drew a walk.

Benton plated Mollura with a single into right field to make it 3-0 for the Lady Bison.

Clearfield added an insurance run in the top of the seventh as Rumsky led off with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch. The Lady Lions intentionally walked Hipps to get to Olivia Bender, who bounced a single over the heads of the pitcher and the shortstop allowing Rumsky to score.

Mollura singled with two outs, but the Lady Lions threw Hipps out at home for the final out of the inning.

Chestnut Ridge’s Isabella Wingard drew a six-pitch walk before Alex Dunlap singled her home. Dunlap’s courtesy runner, Zoie Dunlap, was plated by a Katie Gibbner single to cut the lead to 4-2.

Lydia Mock singled and Gibbner eventually came home on a wild pitch. Hipps stranded the tying run at third after a pop-up to second and a strikeout of Makayla Weyandt to set the final.

“Hipps has good movement on her ball,” Lazor said. “She hits her spots. She’s a great young pitcher. I was checking her numbers coming into it and the amount of strikeouts she had, I was amazed. She had decent speed, but not killer speed.”

Chestnut Ridge ended the season at 19-5.
