Eagles ‘lucky’ to end up super
Sunday Sports Mailbag
I felt Tom Brady was going to pull out the Super Bowl for the Patriots.
Two things happened, Brady fumbled while trying to throw a pass in the fourth quarter, and the Eagles recovered. Brady is the last one to do something like that.
The other oddity was the “Jesse James” situation by Philadelphia tight end Zach Ertz, who caught a pass around the 5-yard line and was slowed down by the Patriots’ defender.
Ertz spun around and ran a few steps and stretched over the goal line and looked like he did not have full control of the ball. The referee called it a touchdown, and it was reviewed and confirmed by officials in New York.
One announcer said he had doubts that it was good and said this rule should be done away with for next season.
The interpretation was the receiver, upon catching the ball, became a runner in stretching over the goal line and this rule didn’t apply — touchdown.
The game was great but stunk in the end. I thought the Eagles were very lucky.
Other weekend observations:
n Congratulations to the national championship Penn State wrestling team for a nail-biting win over Ohio State, 19-18. Our unranked wrestlers really did themselves proud and made the Nittany Lions Big Ten champs for 2018, barring a loss to Iowa (Saturday night).
n The men’s basketball team is starting to put it all together, finally. We have five games left. I feel the Lions need four or five more wins during the regular season and Big Ten Tournament in New York to get to the NCAA Tournament.
