The Clearfield County Charitable Foundation recently awarded grants from the Sara Jane Mattern Fund to three organizations in Osceola Mills.
The Osceola Mills Community Library, the Osceola Mills Community Historical Foundation and the Osceola Mills United Methodist Church will split more than $1,200 this year.
This was the first year for grants from the fund. Mattern, who died in 2011, was raised in Osceola Mills and was very community-minded, according to her attorney, Larry Seaman.
When she died, Mattern left a trust without an heir. Seaman decided setting up a fund to benefit these organizations was the best way to honor her memory.
These groups will be awarded money on a yearly basis for the unlimited future.
The library will use the money to purchase a computer for public use. The library was formed in 2012 after the Clearfield County library system decided to close the Osceola Mills branch. Volunteers stepped in to run the library and it is now financed only by donations and other fundraising efforts.
The Historical Foundation, which is converting its steam radiators to hot water radiators, will use the money toward its cost. Their building houses the library, museum and the community meeting rooms.
The church will use its grant to help pay for the replacement of the steps in the entranceway.
The foundation welcomes inquiries from potential donors or those interested in establishing funds to benefit local communities and organizations.
