War descendants to host professor
BELLWOOD -?The Descendents of Civil War Veterans will host Professor Paul Newman, who will present a slide presentation at their meeting titled "The Faces of the Civil War - Pennsylvanians and Americans and the Realities of Armed Conflict."
This meeting will be held at 7 p.m. July 23 at the Bellwood-Antis Public Library.
Barnes & Noble plans Batman Day
Barnes &?Noble Altoona is planning an exciting event as part of the Get Pop-Cultured with Barnes & Noble campaign.
On July 23, the store will host Batman Day, a celebration for both kids and adults of the Caped Crusader's enormous influence on pop culture.
On Batman Day, customers can celebrate the Caped Crusader's 75th anniversary with activities and giveaways - including a free special edition of Detective Comics No. 27. In addition, fans can enter for a chance to win their own Mini Bat Signal.
Events include storytime and craft at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m., a costume contest for kids and adults at 6 p.m. and trivia at 6:30 p.m. for kids and 7 p.m. for adults.
Get Pop-Cultured with Barnes & Noble is a month-long pop culture celebration in stores nationwide from July 18 through Aug. 10.
It brings to life customers' favorite books, characters, DVDs, artists, illustrators and pop-culture icons with themed events, author signings, panel discussions, contests, exclusive content, giveaways and prizes, sneak peeks, activities and more.
In addition, throughout the month, customers can enter the exclusive Get Pop-Cultured Sweepstakes from NOOK for a chance to win a $1,000 Barnes & Noble Gift Card, a Warner Bros. Studio VIP Tour for two and many other prizes by visiting the NOOK counter at their local Barnes & Noble.
St. Vincent de Paul collecting supplies
The St. Vincent de Paul Society is sponsoring its back-to-school project to help needy kids with new school supplies.
Financial donations can be sent to SVDP Youth Ministry at 927 Franklin St., Johnstown, PA 15905.
New school supplies will also be accepted.

Pressure canning workshop is July 24
DUNCANSVILLE -?The Penn State Cooperative Extension will offer a hands-on workshop on pressure canning from 6 to 9 p.m. July 24 at the Duncansville Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1200 Fourth Ave.
Participants will have a supervised experience of using a pressure canner and each person will take home one or two pints of a processed product.
According to the extension office, if you can green beans, beets, carrots, soups, meats or any other low acid foods, then pressure canning is the only safe way to can these foods to prevent botulism.
Information on water bath canning, freezing and drying foods will also be provided, and everyone will receive the latest Let's Preserve fact sheets.
Sharon McDonald, extension educator, and Jackie Forsht, master food preserver, will lead the class.
