This is in response to Joe Hill's letter (June 26) about divisions within our country.
Yes, I agree. We can continue to travel down the current destructive road of socialism that the liberals have inflicted on us since the election of President Barack Obama or return to the America that made us the greatest nation and society in history.
Hill states that conservatives cut the SNAP program. Federal law requires these cuts. Hill surely knows that any law must be approved by the House and the Senate, since the Senate is controlled by the Democrats, his assumption must be that liberals and conservatives alike hate the poor. That's absurd.
The average cut for a family of four is $36 per month. That's $1.20 per day per person. Many folks working more than one job have had to cut their food expenses also. A person receiving the minimum snap assistance will drop $1.
Hill also misstates the fact when he implies that conservatives champion more guns for everyone, regardless of fitness to own one.
The NRA and other conservative groups have been pushing for mental background checks for decades. Here are some interesting facts:
The Aurora, Colo., shooter was a staff worker for the Obama campaign, and he also participated in Occupy Wall Street. He was a progressive liberal and a registered Democrat.
The Newtown, Conn., shooter hated Christians and was a registered Democrat.
The Columbine High School shooters were too young to vote, but both of their families were progressive liberals and registered Democrats. Not one of these shooters was an NRA member. This leads me to conclude the answer to gun violence is to not sell guns to Democrats.
I worked for 50 cents an hour for many farmers in the Cove area growing up - picking rocks, bailing hay and straw and cleaning calf pens and pig pens on Saturdays during the school year with a pitch fork and a shovel.
Do I hate those farmers for paying a low wage? No, I was then and am now grateful for the opportunity to learn the value of hard work and pride in myself for earning my own money.
As for the minimum wage, as a small business owner, I know any increase will keep me from hiring any kids for summer work. It will also raise the price of every product consumers use more than the amount of any benefit it would create.
You say we get as much democracy as we can afford to pay for. I say we get as much democracy as we vote for, and I hope all liberals are getting exactly what they voted for - a corrupt, dishonest administration stealing away our personal freedoms.
By the way, I don't hate the rich; I help the poor.
It's good that progressives understand the poor, because their progressive policies have sure made a lot more of them.
