YORK - Central Cambria High School junior Dom Stevens recorded the best score among the four area participants in the PIAA Golf Championships on Monday at Heritage Hills Golf Resort.
Stevens, competing in Class AA, shot a 7-over-par 78 to place him in a tie for ninth place with two other golfers after the first day of competition. The tournament will conclude today.
Claysburg-Kimmel's Tyler Brown is not far behind Stevens after shooting a 79. Brown is in a tie with three other golfers for 12th place.
District 6 Class AA champion Jeremy Eckenrode, a sophomore from Central Cambria, shot an 83 and is in a two-way tie for 24th place among the 36 AA participants.
Northwestern Lehigh senior Cole Miller leads the AA field with a 2-under 69.
In Class AAA, District 6 runner-up and PIAA Western Regional runner-up Hunter Shields, a senior from Hollidaysburg, got off to a slow start and didn't recover, shooting a 21-over 92 that has him in 36th place among the 36 AAA golfers.
"Hunter had a hard time adapting to the conditions of the course today,'' Hollidaysburg coach Bryan James said. "Following the round, we spent two hours on the range and practice green. I believe we were able to address a few flaws that plagued him throughout his round today. I look for a much better showing from him tomorrow.''
Manheim Township's Ryan Domes leads the AAA field with a 1-over 72.
