STATE COLLEGE - Mother Nature sure does have a cruel sense of humor.
It was a beautiful day when the District 6 Class AAAA semifinal between Altoona and State College started on Thursday. The teams got through four innings, and Mother Nature decided to put a halt to the game with the Little Lions leading the Mountain Lions, 9-0.
State College did all of its damage in the first inning. The Little Lions also received a little help from Altoona's defense, which committed three errors.
Caleb Walls opened the game for the Little Lions by reaching on an error by the Mountain Lions' second baseman, Joel Reighard. Walls later came around to score when Altoona's starting pitcher, Ben Wyland, made an errant throw to first trying to get State College's Dan Fry.
Following Fry's at-bat, Darian Herncane smacked a bases-clearing double to left field, pushing the Little Lions' lead to 4-0. Calvin Sichler drew a walk in his at-bat and was followed by Ken Craig's triple that drove in Herncane and Sichler. Craig then scored on the same play from another error from Reighard.
Tanner Witter followed Craig with a single to left field, and State College started to bat around. Walls laid down a perfect bunt, and Nick Smith loaded the bases up with a single of his own. Fry drove in all three with a double, and that was all for the scoring in the game to that point.
The semifinal is scheduled to be picked back up today in the top of the fifth with a time to be determined.
