Thomas C. "Tom" Woods, 87, Hollidaysburg, died unexpectedly Thursday morning at Altoona Regional Emergency Department.
He was born in Hollidaysburg, son of Thomas F. and Anna (Helsel) Woods.
Surviving are his wife, Janet G. (Stiffler), with whom he shared 57 years of marriage; two daughters: Kandy A. Butler and husband, Kevin, of Sarasota, Fla., and Vicki Petty of Brookes Mills; two sons: Kevin E. of Hollidaysburg and Tracy A. and his significant other, Sheila, of Duncansville; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two sisters: Mary Martha Metris and Sally A. Janeiro; and two brothers: John Patrick and James and wife, Sylvia.
Tom was a 1946 graduate of Hollidaysburg High School. He served in Company M, 253rd Infantry, U.S. Army, in WWII, and he was wounded on April 8, 1945, while serving in the European Theater. He received the Purple Heart for his injury and was also awarded the Bronze Star. He retired from Conrail in January 1991, where he had worked at the Samuel Rea Shop as a car repairman.
Tom was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Hollidaysburg, and also belonged to the Allegheny Club, Fort Fetter American Legion Post 516, Unter Uns and Duncansville VFW, where he was a life member.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, March 17, 2013, at Sorge Funeral Home Inc., Hollidaysburg. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, March 18, 2013, at St. Mary Catholic Church, Hollidaysburg, by Father Anthony J. Legarski. Committal will be at New St. Mary Cemetery, Hollidaysburg, with military honors under the direction of the Blair County Veterans Honor Guard.
