Lions, Dragons staying close

June 6, 2012
The Altoona Mirror

Altoona's PIAA quarterfinal round Class AAAA baseball playoff game will be much closer to home than the Mountain Lions' interdistrict opener, and Central's second round Class AA softball game will be even closer.

The PIAA announced some of the sites for Thursday's quarterfinal contests on Tuesday afternoon, and the Lions are set to take on District 7 runner-up Mount Lebanon at 4 p.m. at Somerset Area High School.

Altoona takes a 16-5 record into the game. In the first round on Monday, the Lions knocked off Seneca Valley, the team that defeated Mount Lebanon in the WPIAL final, by a 9-4 count. The Blue Devils improved to 14-11 by downing District 10 champ McDowell on Monday.

Central, meanwhile, will be at St. Francis University to try to dispatch its second district champion in a row, this time District 7's Deer Lakes. First pitch in Loretto is scheduled for 3 p.m.

The Philipsburg-Osceola baseball team also is scheduled to be in action, taking on District 11 champ Pine Grove. No site or time has been announced for the game yet - Pine Grove's first round game was postponed from Monday to Tuesday because of rain - and District 6 baseball chairman Dave Crumrine said he expected a decision to be made by the PIAA on the Mounties' venue this morning.
